Japanese binding-
Steps to create a Japanese bind:
1. Start off with printing your photographs that you wish to use for this book. To print your photographs you need to print off 8, of the same size, photographs which all have the same size border surroundings them. The border that you are placing the stitch shoes be bigger, to allow room for the stitches so you still end up having an equal border after placing the stitch.
2. The second step is to cut out all of your photographs. The lines and borders need to be equal and straight. If these factors are not even or straight it will create the book to be wonky and uneven. You can cut these photographs out using scissors or a scalpel to be more precise.
3. After cutting out the photographs you need to create your front cover. This front cover can be any colour and it can have a print on it as long as when you print this photograph you leave room for the stitch. These pieces for the covers need to be the same size as your photographs so all of the pages are equal.
4. After cutting all the photographs and covers to match sure they are the same size and equal, you should hold your book together using a clip or band. This needs to be held securely else it can result in the pages moving and the stitch being uneven and unsuccessful.
5. The next step will help you prepare you pages ready to stitch. You should measure out the distance between where you would like to stitch. This needs to be even else it will look weird once the final project has been made. After making where each hole will be, you need to crest these holes us a pin as the needle will not be strong enough to go through the paper and card. Once the holes have been made, the stitching can begin. This stitch can be done in plenty of different ways to create unique binds.
6. To start your stitch securely, you should start by going to the middle of your pages and thread up through on of the holes to the front cover. Make sure you leave thread behind so it hangs out the edge of the book, and then carry on to stitch your design.
7. To finish up the stitch, you have to end by threading from the back cover going towards the front cover. However as you get to the middle page you will end your stitch there. This will leave the thread from the start and the end to be next to each other. Then to end this stitch just finish by knotting the two pieces of thread together and cutting off the excess thread.
I plan to use this binding method to create a final outcome. This is because I think that it is a good decorative technique to use to bind a book. I plan to further my research on different styles of photobooks, so this will be one I look further into.
